Fix: QuickBooks can't read the file your financial institution sent

This is one of the most common QuickBooks Desktop bank import errors. It appears when you try to import a transaction file via File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files and QuickBooks displays: 'We can't read the file your financial institution sent.'

The error has two common causes. First: the file is a .qfx file (Quicken format), not a .qbo file. QuickBooks requires .qbo. Simply renaming the file doesn't help — the file contents need to change too, specifically the INTU.BID element. Second: the INTU.BID in the file is wrong or missing. QuickBooks matches the INTU.BID in the file to its internal list of financial institutions. If the ID doesn't match, QuickBooks can't identify the institution and rejects the file.

The fix: use QBOConvert to convert the file to .qbo format with the correct INTU.BID for your bank. If your bank is in the preset list, select it. If not, you'll need to find the correct INTU.BID from your bank's documentation or an OFX FID reference list.

Steps to fix the error

  1. Note what file type your bank gave you (.qfx, .ofx, or .qbo).
  2. Open QBOConvert and select → QBO as the target.
  3. Drop the file in. Check the file report — confirm FID and INTU.BID are shown.
  4. Select your bank from the preset list if available. Otherwise enter the INTU.BID manually (full version).
  5. Download the converted .qbo file.
  6. Try the import again in QuickBooks: File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files.

What if the error still appears after converting?

The INTU.BID may not match QuickBooks's institution database. Try a different INTU.BID value — your bank may have multiple IDs for different account types (checking vs. savings vs. credit card). Also confirm you're importing via Web Connect, not through the direct connection (Express Web Connect).

Is there a list of valid QuickBooks INTU.BID values?

Intuit does not publish a comprehensive public list. Community-maintained OFX FID databases (searchable on GitHub and hobbyist finance forums) contain many verified entries. Your bank's customer service or online banking help section may also document their OFX connection parameters.

Does this affect QuickBooks Online?

QuickBooks Online (the subscription web version) uses a different import mechanism. The 'can't read the file' error is specific to QuickBooks Desktop's Web Connect. QBO (QuickBooks Online) imports via the Banking menu using OFX, CSV or direct connection.
